Step 1

SA 2,5 blasting

This treatment should only be applied to new steel. This treatment will produce larger troths in the steel surface. The anchor profile may be no larger than 45 microns.

Step 2

Apply Zinc primer 

Make sure this primer is applied in a thin layer, equally distributed over the surface of the boat. 

It is important to make sure Zinc primer is applied in a even layer of 100 micron when the paint is wet. The layer thickness may be measured with a "wet film comb”.

Because the SA2,5 treatment produces larger troths in the steel surface, you may want to use a brush to thouroughly “push in” the zinc primer in all the nooks and crannies of the surface


Step 3

Apply Neoguard

Neoguard will waterproof the coating system. Neoguard can be easily recognised by its black colour.

It is important that you make sure the wet layer thickness of Neoguard is right. If the layer is too thick there will be a higher risk of blister forming underneath the paint.

Roll application
If you apply Neoguard by brush or roller, make sure to dilute Neoguard by 0-5% using Neothinner Roll.

Spray application
If you apply Neoguard by airless spray, make sure to dilute Neoguard by 5-10% using Neothinner Spray.

Apply Neoguard in three layers. The second and third layer may be applied while the layer underneath is still wet.

One layer of Neoguard may have a wet film thickness of 130 microns. Apply 3 of these layers on top of each other leaving approximately 15 min of drying time between each layer. The total wet film thickness should be approximately 390 microns. The layer thickness may be measured with a "wet film comb”. After drying this will result in a dry film layer of 240 microns.

Make sure to dry Neoguard overnight before applying the final layer of Neosil.

Step 4

Apply Neosil

Neosil is a two component coating. You will have a “Component A” and a smaller “Component B” container. 

Open both containers and add component B to the container of component A. Make sure you always mix the entirety of the two containers. The ratio of component A and B is very sensitive, therefore mixing a part of the container might result in undesired results.

By using an electric power mixer, mix the two components together for about 5 minutes. Let the mixture rest for 45 minutes (induction time). After this Neosil has a pot life of 4 hours.

Using an Anza roller, or other roller that is suitable for two component coatings, roll the neosil coating at a wet film thickness of 140 microns. The layer thickness may be measured with a "wet film comb”.

If you choose to apply Neosil by airless spray, make sure you do not use a paint spray with a beaker but a pump, adjust the nozzle to crease a good mist. For more details please check the TDS.

If you need to dilute Neosil for airless spray, make sure you dilute no more than 5% - 10% using Neosil Thinner Special. Do NOT use thinner, solvatane or other materials not approved by DDC.

NEOSIL must cure more than 72h, at approximately 18°c., before the vessel is launched into the water, to obtain his optimal characteristics. Because the coating is still vulnerable for mechanical damages, it is advised to have the full system cure for 7 days before allowing the ship to water. When Neosil is applied using airless spray the final layer of Neosil Coating should dry at least 36 hours, at 18 °c.
